Em raras ocasiões um gatinho Bengal com pêlos compridos nasce, essa é a origem do Amicat Cashmere Bengal

O pêlo longo do Bengal, também referido como o Cashmere Bengal, é extremamente rara e pode ser muito lindo.

O Cashmere é a variedade de pêlos compridos do gato de Bengal. Ambos os pais tem que carregar o gene recessivo para o pêlo longo. O gene recessivo para o cabelo longo é encontrado em muitas raças de cabelos curtos.Muitas novas raças foram criadas a partir da variedade de pelos compridos de uma raça de cabelos curtos. Um exemplo é o da Somália, a variedade de pelos compridos da Abissínia. E, da mesma forma, o Cashmere é a variedade de pelos compridos do gato de Bengal.

Geno=gene (deals with what the dogs actual genes look like), pheno (P is for picture, deals with what the dog physically looks like, the physical picture of the dog). You can also consider genotype is what is on the inside, phenotype is what is on the outside. There are several genetic locations (Loci) in which determine a dog’s color genetically. At each location, is a pair of genes (Alleles).
For Blue RARE English bulldogs puppies, the Loci, or location is called D for dilution. The possible alleles (or genes) at the D loci are “D” and “d”. Every dog is either “D-D”, “D-d”, or “d-d”. These are the genotypes. A genotype of “D-D” produces a pheontype of Non-dilute, or non-blue. The genotype “D-d” is what is typically called a “blue-carrier”. These dogs have a phenotype EXACTLY the same as “D-D”. They are NON-dilutes, and NON-blues. “D” is a dominant allele over “d” so only dogs which have a “d-d” genotype will have a blue or dilute phenotype. In other words, only “d-d” dogs are actually blue in color. Blue is a dilution which acts on black pigment as well as black colored hairs. Any pigment or hairs that would otherwise be black are diluted from black to blue on a “d-d” dog. This is what makes solid blue, blue brindle, blue fawn, blue pied, blue with tan points, blue masked fawn, blue sable fawn, and all other varieties of blue possible. D-d and d-d dogs can produce blue offspring. Any dog D-D, that is bred to a blue d-d, will produce an entire litter of D-d puppies, which are blue-carriers, but not blue. Each puppy inherits one gene from each parent.
The next Loci to talk about is K. At the K loci is where the determination is made for brindle or fawn. Possible alleles are K, Kbr, and k. K is dominant (solid black) kbr brindle and k fawn. We can simplify this loci to a basic dominant-recessive relationship (similar to blue or chocolate) with “kbr” (brindle) being dominant over “k” (fawn or non-brindle). “kbr-kbr” and “kbr-k” would be brindle, while only “k-k” would be fawn (or non-brindle). A Homozygous (which just means two of the same gene) brindle “kbr-kbr” would always produce brindle pups. This would be beneficial if one is trying to produce brindle-colored pups, or detrimental if one is trying to produce non-brindles. If the dog has just one K gene for solid black they will only be black with no other coloration with the exception of white like a black lab. K masks all other possible secondary colors in the phenotype but they ca be carriers for the genes on the a locus.
The A loci is the one responsible for the different variations of fawn and contributes to markings on tri dogs. Possible alleles are Ay, Aw, At, and a. Ay is dominant (solid) fawn. aw is for (wild or the wolf-type grey color) and is responsible for the sable in some fawns. at is responsible for tan points (black and tans). Lastly, a, is recessive black. For example; a blue tri bulldog would have to be kk (no dominant black “K” or brindle), at at for fawn points, and have the dd recessive. All the recessive genes must occur in this combination. A blue tri is a very rare color combination and much higher in price because the chances of having a blue tri dog are very slim!!
Chocolate works in a similar way to blue as it is recessive. At the chocolate loci, B (I say B for brown) exists the two alleles “B” and “b”. Bulldogs can either be “BB” or “Bb” (non-chocolate). B is dominant to b so only those dogs with a “b-b” genotype will express the chocolate color. Chocolate is similar to a dilution as it acts upon black pigment making it brown. So the genotype of a chocolate dog is K,bb (self colored like a chocolate lab) or kk ,bb,Ay or kk,atat,bb (chocolate tri).

The Lilac is the most misunderstood. Lilac RARE English bulldogs puppies are simply diluted chocolate. A lilac tri must be kk (non bindle), bb (brown causes black to be a brown or chocolate color), dd (dilution gene to get the light chocolate coloring. A lilac dog would have no black or grey hairs. The nose is chocolate and eyes are blue or hazel. I believe all the recessive genes in this combination are very very unlikely so I strongly recommend a DNA test be done before purchase.
The last loci to discuss is S, patches of white. This is where piebald markings come from. Alleles are S, si, sp, and sw. S is dominant for self-colored (can have white chest or toes – under 10 percent white). The si is for Irish spotting, which usually is white chest, lower legs, undersides, white collar, white blaze and can be 10-30 percent white. The sp allele is for the typical piebald, which is random spots of color can be 20-80 percent white and is usually non-symmetrical. The sw allele is for extreme white. Any combination of the recessive genes white genes creates the degree of white marking.

Veterinarians must study for 8 years in an accredited school before they can give a puppy a simple shot. Yet, dog breeders produce LIVES of puppies without any credentials to prove competency. The medical treatment of a young adult dog with early degenerative disease may be due to unethical dog brokering and careless dog breeders who have no knowledge of canine genetics, microbiology, parasitology and pathology' It should matter who you choose to purchase from.We offer many informative articles on several subjects on his website.
I maintain a clean, but happy home. Our dogs are like children an enjoy the comfort of the home environment. We buy our dogs organic cotton toys and natural latex rubber or silicone toys . We use real lambs wool from "Holy Lambs Organics" and natural rubber foam pads placed inside of zipper cotton cushions for our dog beds. Wouldnt it make more sense to have a blood test to check for titer levels against parvo and distemper instead? If antibodies are high enough in the pets blood to prevent the main lethal diseases then why vaccinate for them that year?
Why breeders release a puppies under 12 weeks.

Bad breeders toss 8 week olds into your hands WITHOUT vaccines and such a puppy is vulnerable to fatal Parvo. Bad breeders also want puppies gone by 8 weeks BEFORE the 8 to 12 week growth spurt. Once the growth spurt is over the dishonest breeder won't be able to trick you anymore about size. age. A breeder who is trying to pass off a larger Chihuahua as a teacup will want the puppy gone and in your hands BEFORE the growth spurt occurs. A second reason is because of the work involved with taking care of puppies. Mother dogs stop cleaning up puppies around 6-8 weeks old and the breeder has to take over the job. How much easier is it for the breeder to let the puppy go early?
Too many vaccines may lead to health decline, even death.

Young puppies have immature immune systems and their immune system can become disrupted when hit with several disease at the same time. (vaccines simulate disease as I mentioned earlier ) How often in nature would any animal get hit with more then one disease at the same time? Never. In our puppies under 9 weeks we give only single Parvo vaccines which address the number one killer of puppies, CPV. This one vaccine allows the pup's immune system to focus on the ONE simulated disease and build titer levels high enough to offer protection against the disease. Studies have shown that multiple vaccines given at the same time in puppies under 10 weeks seems to confuse the immune system so that it is unable to produce proper titer levels of protection. Vaccines simulate disease when put into the body. Protection from disease comes from the pup's immune system . The immune system must respond in a specific way against the disease the vaccine simulated, in order to produce antibodiesAccording to Dr. Pitcairn, vaccines intended to protect pets against acute natural diseases actually create chronic conditions with features of the disease the vaccine was supposed to prevent. Vaccines contain a number of toxic substances, including viruses, mutated bacteria, immune irritants, foreign proteins, and preservatives.
Never Give A Parvo Vaccine To A Puppy With Diarrhea, Worms, Cocci

Research shows that the parvo vaccine works by the vaccine lodging in the intestines and stimulating titer level in the intestinal lining. If the intestinal lining is inflamed with sores from worms, or parasites, then the Parvo vaccine and immune system are unable to work together in a healthy normal environment, with tragic results. It is possible for a modified live Parvo vaccine to induce a parvo like illness when in a pup has inflamed or raw intestinal lining. Informed Vets now call this " Vaccine induced Parvo". Many Vets are not even aware that this fatal illness can occur from a modified live vaccine and this could be because the do not attend seminars on a regular basis. Not all vets have the same knowledge.
My advice is to deworm at 3 and 5 weeks before vaccinating and at the same time make sure no diarrhea is present. Of so then do a fecal test and start medications as prescribed . I give probiotics (Benebac) which help to crowd out harmful bacteria. Any puppies with loose stools after deworming suggests toxics and/or parasites and it is advised for them to be placed on Albon for a few days before vaccinating since vaccinating a puppy with Cocci parasites or sore intestines may be as good as a death sentence in a young pup. I also advise Amber technology "Vaccine Detox" following vaccination. I suggest Amber Technology " Vibractra Plus" if puppy shows distress during vaccinations yet fecals are clear not showing worms or parasites. Be aware that Giarda does NOT show up in all fecal exams and any puppy who has ongoing diarrhea with weight loss should bring to mind Giardia even with a negative fecal result. In my opinion Any Vet of any worth will put a puppy with chronic diarrhea and weight loss on Flagyl for a trial run of three days. It may not be safe to use Vibractra with Albon or Flagy. This subject may also (for interesting details) be researched under a lawsuit breeders brought against a major vaccine company when their vaccinated puppies died. It is my opinion that the vaccine company certainly didn't understand the relationship between cocci infestation, inflammation of intestines and Parvo vaccinations or they may not have lost the lawsuit. Narcropsy showed the dead puppies were infested with Cocci, a BREEDER liability, in my opinion. Breeders may argue back that vaccine companies should be made to disclose on their lables not to give to puppies a modifed LIVE Pavo vaccine if puppies are showing any signs of intestinal issues.

Canned dog food can spell DISASTER for puppies!
Although the canning process kills bacteria in the animal meat used to make the dogfood, the endotoxins
( bacteria "poop") from the meat may still remain behind once the bacteria cells are destroyed. Tiny fragile puppies either can't handle these byproducts in canned food, or the canned food is far too rich and causes severe diarrhea. I steer away from it. I have never noticed any issues with a high quality premium dry foods. This issue appears only related to wet dog foods. Besides tracing episodes in sick puppies to canned food when i was a novice breeder, I also received many emails once I posted the warnings. People contacted me with sick or dying puppies they bought from other breeders. All these people had their puppies on canned food! Even their Veterinarians didn't know the dangers! Some Veterinarians had actually advised the canned food for these too young puppies who had stopped eating due to stress and resulting illness. Following my advise on how to clean up the intestinal tract of the bad bacteria and toxins, most of their puppies recovered. Rabies vaccine. Use with caution. Some advice.
I receive many emails every year from families who wished they had seen my warnings first. Their adult dogs died following a rabies vaccine that their Vet had given right along with the yearly booster vaccines. I have lectured on my site for years to never permit a Vet to throw in the rabies shot along with the boosters.

Now that you've finally found your kitten it's time to prepare for his or her arrival. There are items that need to be purchased, a little cat proofing to be done, & decisions that need to be made ahead of time so that your kitten's homecoming goes smoothly & is as stress free as possible.

Your Veterinarian

Your kitten will need to be examined by your veterinarian within 48 hours of leaving our care (as stated on the sales contract) or the health guarantee will be void. A HEALTH INFORMATION SHEET will be provided for your kitten detailing the vaccinations given, dewormer medications administered, & any flea protection applied (we use REVOLUTION). Please make sure to give this sheet to your veterinarian so he or she can continue to provide your kitten with the quality healthcare he or she is accustomed to.



Purchase Kitten Food

Your kitten has been eating high Premium. We did lots of research on what kittens & cats need in their diets to maintain exceptional health & avoid Feline Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). A feline diet that is too high in carbohydrates & magnesium, and low in protein can lead to FLUTD. The challenge was to find a cat & kitten food that was appealing to all of our maine coons, that contains the proper amount of protein & magnesium, & has no by products.


Purchase Stainless Steel Bowls
& or Water Fountain

Your kitten has been eating & drinking out of stainless steel bowls. Why stainless steel - stainless steel does not absorb smells, does not stain, & is easy to clean & disinfect....plus your kitten will be less likely to chew on stainless steel bowls than plastic, & they will not break like glass or ceramic either. Our older cats enjoy their stainless steel water fountain. Please remember that Maine Coons love water & a fountain will provide countless hours of entertainment & enjoyment for your kitten.




Purchase A Litter Box & Litter

Your kitten has been using an open pan litter box with. We prefer open pan litter boxes because we scoop at least two times a day & like the ease of access. All of our maine coon's litter boxes (kitten litter boxes are in the nursery) are housed on our screened potty porch that they access through a cat/dog door so we really do not have a need for the litter boxes with tops, hoods, & or covers for out maine coon cats. However, we do use a modified type of litter box (that's covered) in the nursery that allows kittens to access & mom no entry - our kittens use the modified litter box until they're about 8 or 9 weeks of age. Then they graduate to an open pan litter box that's placed in an area only they can access. Should you choose a covered litter box remember to scoop it regularly & know that it can trap humidity as well as the smelly odor that your cat might find undesirable - which could lead to him or her pottying somewhere else. Cats & kittens tend to like what they are use to as far as litter is concerned. We're back to using Tidy Cats Instant Action Scoopable Litter after using pine pellets for a while.....mainly because of time constraints. Pine pellats are fine to use. Remember, if your cat or kitten is not happy with the litter box for any reason he or she might be inclined to potty else where. NOTE: cats/kitttens prefer litter boxes & digging so if they potty else where they're trying to tell you something!! Litter boxes & litter are personal choices just make sure your kitten agrees with your choice. :)




Grooming Supplies

Your kitten will need just a few grooming tools like a metal comb, a brush, a dematting rake, & cat nail clippers. Remember de-clawing is NOT an option (as per our sales contract), so please purchase the nail clippers & keep your kittens nails clipped.




Cat Trees, Scratching Post, Puzzles,
& Toys

Maximize your kittens health through play. Cat trees, cat towers, & tall scratching post will allow your kitten to get the stretching they need & also give them a SAFE place to go during their rest time. Puzzle toys can be used to dispense food slowly throughout the day, requiring your kitten/cat to solve the puzzle to get rewarded with a food treat. Interacting daily with your kitten will help your kitten not only maintain a healthy body but a healthy mind too. Stress can develop when a kitten's environment is not similar to their natural environment & play helps minimize some of the key differences & stress points.
Your home is about to become a wonderland for your kitten. Please take the time to tidy up & remove any unnecessary power cords & unplug exposed cords of electronics that aren't in use so that your kitten won't be tempted to chew on them. Keep laptops, cell phones, ear plugs, eye glasses, belts, handbags, shoes, etc. picked up too because so many items that most homeowners leave out on a regular basis can & will become items of interest to your kitten. Also, take the time to make sure any toxic products & plants are removed from you home. The following items need to be removed or at least put in a place (locked away) that your cat can not access: acetaminophen, batteries, chocolate, raisons, grapes, currants, onions, leeks, chives, garlic, macadamia nuts, xylitol (sugar free sweetener found in chewing gum, breath mints, & toothpaste), unbaked bread dough, yeast, detergents, household cleaners, bleach, lysol, windshield wiper fluid, antifreeze, insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, fertilizers, kerosene, de-icing salts, aloe, azaleas, chrysanthemums, marijuana, mistletoe, poinsettia, rhododendron, tulips, jimson weed (devil's trumpet), lillies, sago palms, tobacco, mothballs, & zinc (metal & coins). These household items can possibly choke or strangle your kitten: chicken bones, dental floss,
Q-tips, yarn, string, holiday decorations (including lights & tinsel), & toys with small movable parts.

Adult Maine Coon cat weigh between 7 and 12 kg, more elegant cat can weigh from 4 to 6 kg. Generally, these cats grow quite slowly and reach maturity only by 3-4 years. Maine Coons are of SLH group and their hair deserves special attention, especially the tail! Short hair on the head, shoulders and limbs becomes progressively longer to the bottom and sides. The long shaggy hair on the stomach and pants, lush flowing hair on the tail, such thick hair looks like a collar. This coat is a boa, which can protect the cat from snow, rain and wind. And yet it is surprisingly silky by touch and shiny. Who has ever stroked these cats will never forget such a pleasant feeling. A long strong and muscular body makes the animal very maneuverable; they have strong and long legs. Long tufts of hair between the toes help them walk on snow without sinking. There are brushes at the ends of the ears, making it look like a lynx.

Many people incorrectly name this breed as mainecoone, maicoon, meykun, minecoon or even maycoon :). During the meal, Coon uses his paws as a spoon. Before they start drinking, they beat their paws in the water and rake it. It is believed that this is the instinctive action of the wild times when they broke through the ice before drinking water. So only adult cats do and Maine Coon kittens drink water ordinary. Describing the nature of the cat, it's hard to be objective.

Maine Coon looks like a wild tiger but with good character, great temperament, they are very intelligent and self-confident. He is the ideal companion for the whole family.

The Maine Coon is among the largest domesticated breeds of cats. It has a distinctive physical appearance and valuable hunting skills. It is one of theoldest natural breeds in North America, specifically native to the state of Maine,where it is the official state cat.

Although no records exist regarding the Maine Coon's exact origins and date of introduction to the United States, there are multiple competing theories. The breed was popular in cat shows in the late 19th century, but its existence became threatened when long-haired breeds from overseas were introduced in the early 20th century. The Maine Coon has since made a comeback and is now one of the most popular cat breeds in the world.

The Maine Coon is a large and sociable cat, hence its nickname, "the gentle giant". It is characterized by a robust bone structure, rectangular body shape, a silky flowing coat and a long, bushy tail. The breed's colors vary widely, with only lilac and chocolate disallowed for pedigree. Reputed for its intelligence and playful, gentle personality, the Maine Coon is often cited as having "dog-like" characteristics Professionals notice certain health problems in the breed including feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia, but reputable breeders use modern screening methods to minimize the frequency of these problems.

The ancestral origins of the Maine Coon are unknown — there is only speculation and folk tales. One such folk tale involves Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France, who was executed in 1793. The story goes that before her death, Antoinette attempted to escape France with the help of Captain Samuel Clough. She loaded Clough's ship with her most prized possessions, including six of her favorite Turkish Angora cats. Although she did not make it to the United States, her pets safely reached the shores of Wiscasset, Maine, where they bred with other short-haired breeds and developed into the modern breed of the Maine Coon.

Another folk tale involves Captain Charles Coon, an English seafarer who kept long-haired cats aboard his ships. Whenever Coon's ship would anchor in New England ports, the felines would exit the ship and mate with the local feral cat population. When long-haired kittens began appearing in the litters of the local cat population, they were referred to as one of "Coon's cats".

A myth which is trait-based, though genetically impossible,[8] is the idea that the modern Maine Coon descended from ancestors of semi-feral domestic cats and raccoons. This myth is likely based on the common color of the breed (brown tabby) and its bushy tail.[9] Another idea is that the Maine Coon originated between the matings of domestic cats and wild bobcats, which could explain the tufts of hairs that are so commonly seen on the tips of the ears.[7]

The generally accepted theory among breeders is that the Maine Coon is descended from the pairings of local short-haired domestic cats and long-haired breeds brought overseas by English seafarers (possibly by Captain Charles Coon) or 11th-century Norsemen.[9][10] The connection to the Norsemen is seen in the strong resemblance of the Maine Coon to the Norwegian Forest Cat, another breed that is said to be a descendant of cats that traveled with the Norsemen.[11][12]

The first mention of Maine Coons in a literary work was in 1861, in Frances Simpson's The Book of the Cat (1903). F.R. Pierce, who owned several Maine Coons, wrote a chapter about the breed.During the late 1860s, farmers located in Maine told stories about their cats and held the "Maine State Champion Coon Cat" contest at the local Skowhegan Fair.[7]

In 1895, a dozen Maine Coons were entered into a show in Boston. On May 8, 1895, the first North American cat show was hosted at Madison Square Garden in New York City. A female Maine Coon brown tabby, named Cosey, was entered into the show. Owned by Mrs. Fred Brown, Cosey won the silver collar and medal and was named Best in Show.[14] The silver collar was purchased by the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) Foundation with the help of a donation from the National Capital Cat Show. The collar is housed at the CFA Central Office in the Jean Baker Rose Memorial Library.[7]

In the early 20th century, the Maine Coon's popularity began to decline with the introduction of other long-haired breeds, such as the Persian, which originated in the Middle East. The last recorded win by a Maine Coon in a national cat show for over 40 years was in 1911 at a show in Portland, Oregon. The breed was rarely seen after that. The decline was so severe that the breed was declared extinct in the 1950s, although this declaration was considered to be exaggerated and reported prematurely at the time. The Central Maine Cat Club (CMCC) was created in the early 1950s by Alta Smith and Ruby Dyer in attempts to increase the popularity of the Maine Coon. For 11 years, the CMCC held cat shows and hosted exhibitions of photographs of the breed and is noted for creating the first written breed standards for the Maine Coon.

The Maine Coon was denied provisional breed status—one of the three steps required for a breed not yet recognized by the CFA to be able to compete in championship competitions[15]—by the CFA three times, which led to the formation of the Maine Coon Cat Club in 1973. The breed was finally accepted by the CFA under provisional status on May 1, 1975, and was approved for championship status on May 1, 1976. The next couple of decades saw a rise in popularity of the Maine Coon, with championship victories and an increase in national rankings. In 1985, the state of Maine announced that the breed would be named the official State Cat.[16] Today the Maine Coon is the third most popular cat breed, according to the number of kittens registered with the CFA.

Maine Coons are the largest breed of domestic cat. Males weigh from 13 to 18 lb (5.9 to 8.2 kg) with females weighing from 8 to 12 lb (3.6 to 5.4 kg).[18] The height of adults can vary between 10 and 16 in (25 and 41 cm) and they can reach a length of up to 48 in (120 cm), including the tail, which can reach a length of 14 in (36 cm)[19] and is long, tapering, and heavily furred, almost resembling a raccoon's tail. The body is solid and muscular, which is necessary for supporting their own weight, and the chest is broad. Maine Coons possess a rectangular body shape and are slow to physically mature; their full potential size is normally not reached until they are three to five years old, while other cats take about one year.

In 2010, the Guinness World Records accepted a male purebred Maine Coon named "Stewie" as the "Longest Cat" measuring 48.5 in (123 cm) from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Stewie died February 4, 2013, from cancer at his home in Reno, Nevada, at age 8. Large Maine coons can overlap in length with Eurasian lynxes, although with a much lighter build and lower height.

The Maine Coon is a longhaired, or medium-haired, cat. The coat is soft and silky, although texture may vary with coat color. The length is shorter on the head and shoulders, and longer on the stomach and flanks with some cats having a lion-like ruff around their neck. Minimal grooming is required for the breed, compared to other long-haired breeds, as their coat is mostly self-maintaining owing to a light-density undercoat. The coat is subject to seasonal variation with the fur being thicker in the winter and thinner during the summer.

Maine Coons can have any colors that other cats have. Colors indicating crossbreeding, such as chocolate, lavender, the Siamese pointed patterns or the "ticked" patterns, are not accepted by some breed standards (the 'ticked' pattern, for example, is accepted by TICA).The most common pattern seen in the breed is brown tabby.All eye colors are accepted under breed standards, with the exception of the occurrence of blue-colored or odd-eyes (i.e. two eyes of different colors) in cats possessing coat colors other than white.

Maine Coons have several physical adaptations for survival in harsh winter climates. Their dense water-resistant fur is longer and shaggier on their underside and rear for extra protection when they are walking or sitting on top of wet surfaces of snow or ice.[26] Their long and bushy raccoon-like tail is resistant to sinking in snow, and can be curled around their face and shoulders for warmth and protection from wind and blowing snow and it can even be curled around their backside like an insulated seat cushion when sitting down on a snow or ice surface.[27] Large paws, and especially the extra-large paws of polydactyl Maine Coons,[28] facilitate walking on snow and are often compared to snowshoes.[26] Long tufts of fur growing between their toes help keep the toes warm and further aid walking on snow by giving the paws additional structure without significant extra weight.[27] Heavily furred ears with extra long tufts of fur growing from inside help keep their ears warm.

Many of the original Maine Coon cats that inhabited the New England area possessed a trait known as polydactylism (having one or more extra toes on the feet).[26] While some sources claim that trait is thought to have occurred in approximately 40% of the Maine Coon population in Maine at one time, little evidence has been given to substantiate this claim.[29] Polydactylism is rarely, if ever, seen in Maine Coons in the show ring since it is unacceptable by competition standards.[30] The gene for polydactylism is a simple autosomal dominant gene,[31] which has shown to pose no threat to the cat's health.[32] The trait was almost eradicated from the breed due to the fact that it was an automatic disqualifier in show rings.[33] Private organizations and breeders were created in order to keep polydactylism in Maine Coons from disappearing.

Maine Coons are known as the "gentle giants"[4] and possess above-average intelligence, making them relatively easy to train.[3] They are known for being loyal to their family and cautious—but not mean—around strangers, but are independent and not clingy. The Maine Coon is generally not known for being a "lap cat" but their gentle disposition makes the breed relaxed around dogs, other cats, and children. They are playful throughout their lives, with males tending to be more clownish and females generally possessing more dignity, yet both are equally affectionate.[26] Many Maine Coons have a fascination with water and some theorize that this personality trait comes from their ancestors, who were aboard ships for much of their lives.[5] Maine Coons are also well known for being very vocal cats. They are known for their frequent yowling or howling, trilling, chirping, and making other loud vocalizations.

Diet
Maine Coons require ample protein and nutrients in their diets. Since they are a large cat breed with high levels of energy, it is best to feed them quality food. Their dietary needs are fulfilled with both dry food and wet food. However, the wet food should be mixed in with the dry food only 2-3 times a week. Feeding the cat with quality dry food can reduce tartar build up on the teeth. Avoid grain based foods. A cat's natural diet does not contain grain and grain can also lead to obesity in cats. Maine Coons should not eat food that lists soy or some grains as the first ingredient on the label. Food that lists meat as the first ingredient is best for the Maine Coon. Cats can develop allergies from plastic bowls, so it is best if they eat out of a glass or stainless steel bowl

Pet insurance data obtained from a study during years 2003–2006 in Sweden puts the median lifespan of the Maine Coon at >12.5 years. 74% lived to 12 years or more and 54% lived to 16.5 years or more.[36] Maine Coons are generally a healthy and hardy breed and have adapted to survive the New England climate. The most severe threat is feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), the most common heart disease seen in cats, whether pure bred or not. In Maine Coons, it is thought to be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Middle-aged to older cats as well as males are thought to be predisposed to the disease.[37] HCM is a progressive disease and can result in heart failure, paralysis of the hind legs due to clot embolization originating in the heart, and sudden death.[38] A specific mutation that causes HCM is seen in Maine Coons for which testing services are offered.[39] Of all the Maine Coons tested for the MyBPC mutation at the Veterinary Cardiac Genetics Lab at the College of Veterinary Medicine located at Washington State University, approximately one-third tested positive.[40] Not all cats that tested positive will have clinical signs of the disease and some Maine Coon cats with clinical evidence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy test negative for this mutation, strongly suggesting that a second mutation exists in the breed. The HCM prevalence was found to be 10.1% (95% CI 5.8 -14.3 % ) in this study

Another potential health problem is spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), another genetically inherited disease which causes the loss of the spinal-cord neurons which activate the skeletal muscles of the trunk and limbs. Symptoms are normally seen within 3–4 months of age and result in muscle atrophy, muscle weakness, and a shortened life span. A test is offered to detect the genes responsible for SMA
